Good Luck Farm – Lacey Twsp – finally succumbs to Wal-Mart

September 22, 2008

The Good Luck Farm /Thomas VanArsdale House in Lacey Twsp, Ocean County, is about to be leveled for a 142,000 sf Wal-Mart.  Listed in Preservation NJ’s 10 Most Endangered Historic Sites in 2004, the 1790 farmhouse and outbuildings, lovingly restored in the 1970s, was the subject of intense debate for more than 3 years, as local preservation and environmental advocates pulled out all the stops to try to halt the destruction.

Now, trees have been leveled and the farmhouse and outbuildings will be gone very soon.

Lacey has no local historic preservation protections, and state preservation and environmental regulators were of no help to local preservationists’ efforts to save the historic and cultural landscape of the 18th century landmark.
