“Dubious” Speedwell Ave. redevelopment approved, Morristown ignores history, community
The town council of Morristown, earlier this week, approved a redevelopment plan for the historic Speedwell Avenue area that, in the words of a Star Ledger editorial, doesn’t seem to fit the description of “blighted” that’s required for a redevelopment to be approved.
In fact, the Star Ledger points out that “it’s a neighborhood where virtually all the storefronts are occupied by locally owned businesses. And it pulses with life. Drive through that neighborhood on any spring, summer or autumn night and the streets are crowded with people — talking, laughing, playing music.”
Speedwell Avenue is listed in PNJ’s 10 Most Endangered Historic Sites in NJ.
