Venturi / Lieb House on the move to Long Island
The Venturi / Lieb House is finally on the move! The future of this iconic beach residence designed by Philadelphia architect Robert Venturi and his wife Denise Scott Brown was in question earlier this year, as a developer had purchased the property in Barnegat Light, NJ and indicated that he intended to clear the site for new development. The house was tentatively saved from the wrecking ball in February when owners of a Venturi house in Glen Cove, New York agreed to move it to their back yard, but the issue of how to get the house from New Jersey to New York was still unresolved. Too tall to be moved down roadways, a plan was hatched to float the house up the East River on a barge. Due to a hold-up with Glen Cove officials, the house actually had to be relocated to a parking lot temporarily in January 2009, but with an agreement reached and permits signed, the house finally began it’s upriver journey to New York yesterday! The Philadelphia Inquirer and WPVI-TV in Philadelphia offered great coverage of the commencement of the journey: the house should arrive in Glen Cove sometime today.
