Fair Lawn sets a model for much-needed preservation dialogue

April 3, 2009

On the evening of Wednesday, April 1, the Fair Lawn Historic Preservation Commission hosted “Bergen County Historic Preservation.” The event drew attendees from throughout Bergen County, and featured presentations by T. Robins Brown, Bergen County’s Historic Preservation Consultant, Ron Emrich, PNJ’s Executive Director, and Dorothy Guzzo, Executive Director of the New Jersey Historic Trust. Aimed at encouraging dialogue and networking between various parties involved and interested in historic preservation in Bergen County, the session’s utmost goal was education.

Discussion amongst various levels of people involved in preservation is one of the most effective tools in the field. Many of the issues and situations faced by preservationists on a daily basis are similar between communities, and only through discussion and collective understanding will the often-similar solutions needed be revealed. Preservation New Jersey encourages communities to make sure that they are talking amongst themselves and others, as communication is the key to successful action.
