July 16, 2009

Proposed Bill Would Protect Revolutionary War and War of 1812 Battlefields and Sites

On July 15th, the National Parks Subcommittee of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee heard testimony on H.R. 1694 and S. 1168 which would “authorize the acquisition and protection of nationally significant battlefields and associated sites of the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 under the American Battlefield Protection Program. ”  The bill would create a matching grant program that closely resembles the existing one designated for Civil War sites.

H.R. 1694 was introduced by Rep. Rush Holt [DNJ-12] and S. 1168 by Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY).  The House passed the bill on April 21st.  It now awaits Senate approval.
