How many new jobs does it create?
That’s what the Congress, the legislature, the Governor – every public official – is asking about these days. So you want to save/protect/preserve that house/landscape/bank building/streetscape/historic neighborhood? It’ll cost money. But will it create jobs?
New Jersey preservationists, many friends of Preservation New Jersey, will be on Capitol Hill in Washington DC tomorrow for the annual Lobby Day. We’ll be meeting with all our NJ Congressmen and staffs to talk about just that. And we’re armed with data, like
• the federal historic rehab tax credit generated over $4.7 billion private investment in 2009….and created 70,992 jobs!
• one million dollars spent on historic rehab, compared to the same amount spent on new construction, creates 5 to 9 more local constrcution jobs, creates 4.7 more new jobs elsewhere in the community and provides $107,000 more in community income.
There’s more new numbers coming. Tomorrow Rutgers University’s Center for Urban Policy Research releases new and even more detailed jobs creation numbers. Stay tuned!
