Victory for historic houses as U.S. House of Reps. passes HOME Star energy retrofit jobs bill

May 7, 2010

The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a jobs bill that provides incentives to homeowners wanting to improve energy efficiency in their homes.   And the bill was amended at the last moment to include a provision for a rebate on storm windows – not just new replacement windows – and also for storm doors. The rebate will be available to the widest consumer market possible – all existing homes.   It’s a victory for preservation – and historic windows and doors that have been under extreme threat from the replacements industry.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation has been working with key members of Congress for more than a year to help get our message across about energy efficiency and preservation.  They report that homeowners will be eligible to receive a $50 rebate per window or door for a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 12. Home Star will now move on for Senate consideration.
